Managing the Partnership Through Activities
Gameplay allows players to handle the relationship by spending time together in the open world, whether through everyday pursuits or criminal jobs. Examples include walking while holding hands, purchasing food for each other, or shopping for clothing. Rob Nelson, Head of Development at Rockstar North, noted that positive impacts come from shared exploration or heists, depending on player choices.
“You manage the relationship in the way you hopefully nurture any relationship — which is by spending time together.”
Distinct Roles and Separate Routines

Lucia and Jason operate as two independent characters with complementary skills rather than one split protagonist. Lucia draws on kickboxer training while each maintains personal schedules when not together. Texting or calling remains available at any time, and ignoring messages can affect the relationship status.
Optional System and Careful Intimacy
Engagement with romance elements stays fully optional, even as the partnership drives many story missions. Rockstar avoided exaggerated depictions of physical closeness to prevent caricature. Nelson confirmed the studio iterated on these aspects to ensure they feel appropriate and that players uninterested in relationships can opt out without penalty.
