GTA 6 Map Size Compared to RDR2 and GTA 5

Rockstar confirmed that the GTA 6 map is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area and twice that of GTA 5, with Vice City and its suburbs measuring eleven times the area of Los Santos and its surroundings. The developer also noted hundreds of accessible interiors, far exceeding the limited entries available in GTA 5 and GTA Online. These details come from statements to The New York Times and TGG, as reported by IGN, and point to a denser open world for players.

Map Scale Relative to Prior Titles

According to Rockstar, the full GTA 6 map exceeds Red Dead Redemption 2's playable space by a factor of three and doubles the footprint of GTA 5. Vice City itself is described as twice the size of Los Santos, while the city and its suburbs together reach eleven times the area of Los Santos and its surrounding regions.

Interior Access and World Layering

GTA 6 Map Size Compared to RDR2 and GTA 5

GTA 6 will feature hundreds of enterable interiors, a marked increase over the handful of homes, shops, and select buildings accessible in GTA 5. The earlier game and its online mode often required loading screens for additional spaces, whereas the extended GTA 6 footage already displayed varied interiors both in and out of missions.

Rockstar's Approach to Open-World Depth

Rob Nelson told IGN that lessons from Red Dead Redemption 2 informed GTA 6's design, aiming for a consistent, densely populated world that draws players into side activities and exploration. He noted the prior title maximized hardware capabilities to create a living environment, and GTA 6 continues that effort to produce the studio's largest and most complex setting to date.

GTA 6 is a continuation of our team pushing in this direction – doing everything we possibly can to create the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in.
