GTA VI Weather System Adds Hurricanes and Localized Effects

RockstarINTEL reports new details from the Game Informer cover story on GTA VI's weather and world design. The studio evolved its Red Dead Redemption 2 system into a localized, persistent model that includes tropical storms and dynamic wind. The Leonida map is described as roughly twice the size of GTA V with added density and wildlife variety.

Weather and Wind System Updates

The weather model is a localized evolution of the Red Dead Redemption 2 system that keeps effects persistent across the map. Rain can produce rainbows and leave puddles that remain after storms pass, while tropical storms and hurricanes are also present. A new wind system generates offshore breezes, updrafts, and building occlusion that move hair, debris, water, and vegetation, and dynamic clouds travel across Leonida to create varied lighting and conditions.

Art Director Aaron Garbut stated that the map is about twice the size of GTA V while offering greater detail, density, interaction, and interiors. Different regions can display contrasting weather at the same time, such as torrential rain in one area while another remains sunny.

Animal Species and Tracking

More than 170 animal species appear in the game, including over 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals. Certain animals can be tracked and fall into Rare, Discoverable, or Legendary categories whose identities remain undisclosed, with additional work applied to fur, feathers, and movement simulation.
