Rockstar officially killed CJ's entire universe — and turned him into a legend
In GTA V, the Grove Street Families exist only as a dead gang from the early '90s that young characters like Jimmy De Santa wonder if they were even real. This is Rockstar's deliberate meta-joke: after rebooting the series into the HD Universe with GTA IV, they treat the entire 3D Universe — including CJ, Sweet, and Big Smoke — as 'mythical characters from a bygone era.' Dan Houser explicitly confirmed this in a Guardian interview, and the Franklin-Jimmy dialogue about whether GSF was 'a myth' is a double meaning about both the gang and the old games themselves.
